Magna is based within the former Templeborough steelworks building in Rotherham previously named Steel Peech and Tozer. At it’s peak the steelworks employed over 10,000 workers and housed 6 electric arc furnaces producing 18milion tonnes of steel every year.
£46m of Millennium Commission Lottery funding enabled the transformation into Magna Science Adventure Centre which opened in 2001. The building was given a new lease of life as 4 pavilions were installed within the body of the building themed around the 4 elements Air, Earth, Fire and Water, all used in the steel making process. Each pavilion contains over 100 hands on exhibits designed to engage with and inspire children to learn about the world of science with exhibits based around the national curriculum. The attraction offers Steel Tours led by former steel workers telling the story of the steel making industry and an exciting Big Melt Show which lets visitors experience one of Magna’s original arc furnaces being brought back to life through stunning pyrotechnics, audio and smoke!
Now, more than 20 years since the original steelworks had closed, Magna has grown to become not just a popular regional visitor attraction and educational destination but also one of the North’s premier Event Centres hosting conferences, meetings and events for some of the most prestigious business names in the UK. A series of distinctive spaces which allow event organizers to use their imagination to create unforgettable events where the sky’s the limit. Magna’s showcase space, the Big Hall, offers a giant blank canvas that can cater for conferences for up to 2000 people and seated dinners for up to 1000. Magna also offer a series of smaller events spaces, modern meeting rooms, in house catering and an experienced events team. As a testament to the local steel industry, a number of the original features, including hulking hooks and cranes and winding passages have been left untouched, meaning Magna offers one the most unique events facilities in the country. Previous clients have included Mercedes, HBSC, BBC, Royal Mail, Red Bull, and Sheffield University to name but a few.
For extraordinary team building experiences Magna can offer everything from bungee jumping to abseiling, circus skills to workshops and team games to name a few. Bungee jumping takes place in the immense Face of Steel and is bound to be a jaw dropping experience.
Also contributing to Magna’s success is their renowned Eat, Bump & Groove Christmas party nights, where clients can enjoy free dodgem rides, a fully licensed bar and a delicious 3 course meal followed by DJ and dancing ‘till the early hours.
Although Magna has a proud and rich history it’s the future which offers more excitement and opportunities than ever before and there is no telling who is going to be a part of it next.
